** spoiler alert ** I normally really like Laura Kaye's work and looked forward eagerly to this new series, but in my mind, this opening story fell a little flat.

I loved the premise. Vampire King, mourning his long lost mate, afraid of ever making another commitment... and then he meets the innocent virgin and claims her. It was a quick read, and maybe it was only intended as background to a new world, but there really wasn't much happening. Kael met Shayla and felt instantly attracted. He turned her away out of fear, then realised - within the hour - that he'd made a mistake and sent for her again. They got together.

And that was it. She gave a token struggle but accepted him as her life mate - along with immortality of course - within all of five minutes. No conflict. No drama.
It was a sweet, cosy story with some hot sex, but that’s all. A disappointing 3 out of 5.
