Jill is a pediatrician, with her future finally in a good place after a bad divorce 3 years prior, when her past knocks at her door in the form of her EX-step-daughter Abby. She is drunk and distraught because her father (Jill's "ex" of course) is dead. She believes her father was murdered, even if the police don't and implores Jill to help her prove it.

Jill's fiance, Sam, the man of her dreams doesn't want her to get involved with her ex's disturbed and rude daughters. Jill has a 13 year old daughter at home who is a great kid, her grown step-daughters are of questionable character, self centered and unkind. Jill accepts the insults so graciously, she practically turns the other cheek. We are led to believe that a woman of Jill's intelligence would risk everything personal and professional to turn amateur sleuth in order to prove that "once a mother, always a mother" and that there is no expiration date on motherhood.

Personally, I didn't like many of the characters, they just didn't draw me in emotionally. It was pretty "hollywood-ish" with chase scenes, shootings, undercover agents and bad guys. The twists and turns kept it entertaining, for those that like beach-reading, but I like more substance to my reading. I think Scottoline should stick to her crime/justice novels. I was supplied a pre-release copy by Amazon's Vine program for my unbiased review.
