it was amazing

Read from March 25 to April 06, 2012

I am sad to say that I finished reading Same Sun Here by Silas House and Neela Vaswani. Sad because I love these children and don't want to let them go. It's similar to the feeling that I have in June when the 8th graders who have bounced up and down in my face for three years head out the front door for the last time.

I'll admit to some eye rolling before starting because of the very unlikely plot - an Indian immigrant child living in a rent-controlled apartment in NYC and a hillbilly kid from Kentucky form a deep bond via (snail mail!) pen pal correspondence. Seriously?? But the authors build such rich characters with precious, strong voices that I was hooked by the second set of letters. And the settings...oh my, I want to go there. I feel like I've been there.

If you're a fan of Gary D, Schmidt books...well-crafted, deep characterization, capturing the voice of adolescents who live real lives slightly out of the mainstream, you'll love Same Sun Here. Just trust it.

I'm almost afraid to type it...but I wonder...Newbery...maybe?
