There is a tender verse that appears on each page, complimented by the natural sea sponge paintings (also by Rylant). This book comes together very nicely as a look at the different whales of the world.

Mary Beth I use it for descriptive writing. The best example I have is a student who used it to help her write a descriptive piece about all the apparatuses in gymnastics. Like Cynthia Rylant devotes a page to each kind of whale, Allie used the examples of vivid verbs and adjectives to describe a teammate on the parallel bars, balance beam, etc.

Nice. Very nice.
