Ms. Clarke's novel strikes me as one of the strongest entries in contemporary fiction. The prose splendidly matches the historical context, and indeed it seems to me that the style might resemble Jane Austen's were she to adapt 'Midsummer Night's Dream' or 'The Tempest' into novel form.

This is a book that will not wind up in the cultural dustbin; it shall outlive the 'Harry Potters' and 'Twilights' of our currently diseased literary scene. A little more Clarke will do any reader much good.
