Read in April, 2012

Lam finds his footing in the novel's final quarter.
For the preceding 300 pages, though, there's so much unnecessary detail and so much fact-spewing that the novel turns into the kind of history lesson that - back in the day - would have made me nod off.
I finished the book being proud that I'd persevered, but the story itself seemed like words on a page (lots of words on lots of pages, actually), and not something that swept me away.
