Gilt (The Royal Circle, #1)

I admit, I like the Tudors. I loved the show, I love reading about Henry VIII and his six wives. Since Katherine Howard is a teen when she marries she tends to get more attention in Teen/YA lit than the other wives who were adults. The story itself is not new. Katherine Howard was raised by her grandmother in an irresponsible household where the girls and boys would have nightly parties and get up to all kinds of mischief. However this version is told by Katherine Tilney- known as Kitty to Katherine's Cat. The two becomes friends when they live at Katherine's grandmother's house. Kitty and Cat become inseparable and Cat has no problem exploiting her friends loyalty. Cat is brought to court, gets the King's attention. He gets rid of Anne of Cleves and Cat becomes wife #5. However, she is more in love with all the benefits of being royalty and not so much with an aging king whose leg is rotting. She is the executor of her own downfall and brings her ladies down with her. Fans of historical fiction and Tudor enthusiasts would be the best audience for this book. Teens may relate to Katherine Tilney, and will see her as a old time version of the follower of the "mean girl/queen bee". Fans of the Luxe series may find this interesting as it explores similar themes. Adult fans of the Tudors should definitely give this a try! It is less graphic because it is written for teens, but the historical detail is nicely done.
