I decided to give this book a try after reading a great review about it and seeing that it was on the top of the best seller list for 2 years when it was published in 1945. It was a quick, funny read about Betty MacDonald's experiences in the 1920s as a city girl who marries a man who dreams of having a chicken farm. They move to an extremely remote place in the mountains on an island off the coast of Seattle. She describes her arduous life of rising at 4 am to feed hundreds of chickens, cooking on an old wood stove, and living without running water or electricity with the closest neighbors being 4 miles away. Though she has much to complain about, she approaches it all with humor and wit!
This is no literary jewel, but I enjoyed's another book that makes me realize how spoiled I am and appreciate how lucky I am to live now!
