I can always count on Aleksandr Voinov to craft a finely-honed piece of male/male erotica that gets it right and gets it hot while toying with the very edges of a comfort zone. His heroes aren't cookie-cutter or bad gay male romance tropes. He doesn't do metrosexual twinks or mythical uber-daddies. He does real men with dark secrets and even darker lusts. They're sometimes anti-heroes in the true sense of the word and yet they're compulsively readable.

This time Aleks takes on the ultra-violent world of the mafia and this isn't Goodfellas. This isn't stylized. The made men of Dark Soul Vol. 1 are brutal and Voinov doesn't sugarcoat their viciousness and brutality. They're killers and are unapologetic about it. Stefano Marino and Silvio Spadaro are probably one of the most arresting pairs in any genre of romance/erotica period. The attraction between them is tense, palpable and just needing the tiniest impetus to push these two dangerous men over the edge. The edgeplay scene in Dark Soul Vol. 1 is well worth the price of admission alone and is not for those who like their sex nice and fluffy.

My only complaint with this series is that the books are too damn SHORT! Oh well, on to volume 2.
