Another terrific chapter in the Chronicles of Brother Cadfael! As Shrewsbury recovers from the siege of the previous year by the forces of King Stephen and the Abbey adapts to life under a new abbot, the annual Festival of St. Peter ad vincula brings a much anticipated prosperity and gaiety to all... or nearly all. For there are strains on the relationship between town and abbey and the simmering evil of civil war is never far from the surface. When political intrigue comes to town with the buyers and sellers of the fair, a beautiful young woman is endangered and, as usual, only Brother Cadfael can untwist the skein of mystery surrounding assault, theft and murder.

Highly recommended.
