Another one of three books I read every year. Watching the underrated movie first helps to untangle a lot of the plot threads, for newbies and fans alike. Part of the hang-up I think people have with the Dune books, and the first one in particular, is the sheer amount of backstory that's only hinted at; the Butlerian Jihad, the rise of the Landsraad, not to mention that the action takes place eight thousand years in the future, when the generally accepted timeframe for most science fiction was the 21st century. This was quite a quantum leap in storytelling, especially for 1965.

Is it worthy of the title of greatest sci-fi novel ever written, as fans have voted it year after year? Maybe, probably, could be. One thing is certain, it is advanced sci-fi, and not recommended for someone's first read. I've read it maybe a dozen times, and it's almost always a different book each year, and will continue to change and reveal things.
