I am very familiar with the Mass Effect universe, so I can't speak for people going into this with no knowledge of the background (although Karpyshyn sets things up quite neatly for new readers so that they can at least keep up). I enjoyed the story, which revolves around David Anderson and Saren, as a prequel to the first Mass Effect game.

I very much enjoyed reading this and blazed through it quickly. It is much, much better than the terrible ME comics. I give it just three stars because I don't see myself re-reading it, but it was technically and thematically spot-on. Will definitely read Karpyshyn's other books in the series. In fact, I've already purchased them :P

If you like the Mass Effect universe, you won't be disappointed when you read this book. If you are not familiar with the Mass Effect universe, I think you'd be better off familiarising yourself with it first.
