You never know what goes on behind closed doors. And after reading American Wife, we still don’t know what goes on behind closed doors, but it sure is riveting to read what might. When the subject is married to a good-time Charlie (Charlie Blackwell in this case) from a prominent political family, who purchased a Major League baseball team, served as a Republican governor, then won a contested election to become a two-term President . . . well, it all sounds very familiar. The mix of truth and fiction grabs your attention and throttles up the curiosity factor. It convinced me that I’m not interested in being First Lady, but I admit it left me a little empathetic toward the woman who recently held that role.

Callie YES! I agree with your review. Haven't quite finished it yet, but I have always wondered what does Laura Bush SEE in him? And why doesn't she teach him how to pronounce nu-cle-ar??!! Even though I tend to lean left politically speaking, I was glad that she was sympathetic to both Alice and Charlie and that she was willing to show how complicated marriages and people are.

Connie I liked the book, but after reading it felt like she really ripped off Laura Bush's life, then after reading Laura Bush's biography "The Perfect Wife" felt even more so. She takes actual stories from her life from that bio. I think it just gave her more monetary success when Curtis Sittenfeld writes well enough to have just had a book that was a totally fictionalized first lady. I guess she is a fan of Laura Bush, but if I were her I wouldn't be flattered by "American Wife"
