This is a short and utterly gripping novel - really it reads more like a good short story. The grandfather, uncle, and dad are powerfully portrayed, and the 12-year-old narrator's voice rings true, or true enough. The women seem more like place holders.

But the universal dilemma - family loyalty versus community responsibility - in a specific time and place make this a very appealing book.
