I actually listened to an audiobook version of this. I'm not sure if I would have liked this book in written form, but I LOVED the audiobook version. It had music that would play between chapters and at key moments, and I think it really helped to set the story off.

I didn't really connect with any of the characters, and especially the characters from centuries ago. The main character was so entranced by the lives of the people in the past, yet these people didn't seem so interesting to me.

Nevertheless, I liked the book, and I found it very amusing. I didn't really find it "haunting, dark, mysterious, intriguing", as some of the descriptions would make you believe, but I did enjoy it.
