Though this story is thinly veiled social commentary, and does involve destructive humans clear-cutting the forested homeworld of the Athsheans, the title doesn't mean what you presume it means.

In English, the world for world is soil. Earth = soil, Earth = the world. Man is formed from clay, and is ultimately returned to the soil: ashes to ashes, dust to dust.

On this book's planet, the word for world is forest.

But, title aside, humans are jerks.
