The best way to describe this book is "neat." Neat with a capital "N!" The story is interesting with a nice bit of suspense, and the 80's throwbacks made me grin every few pages. Yes, I was a nerd who played Robotron and all the atari games and the author itches the nostalgia scratches (or scratches the itch?) enough to make you go "ahhhh, this is fun. A little to the left" and yes, the author does go a little to the left inevitably and gives you what you want.
The virtual world is well thought out and seems entirely real and believable, but not necessarily new or innovative. A future world which requires knowledge of technology's mass media past to survive, however, is what makes the book so Neat, capital N.
