King Rat might be the easiest to digest of Mieville's works as it's one of his least indulgent - the pace stays quick and the focus is clear. The underlying conceit is charming, and leads to a likable cast of tertiary characters. There's enough gritty physicality to keep the fairytale grounded.

However, King Rat showcases one of Mieville's usual tourist protagonists ("a stranger in a strange land"), while unusually refraining from adding his usual depth after the initial "tour" and the setting is established. The world remains fairly simple from start to end, which made me wish the main character was better-developed. Even to the end, I didn't feel he had any strong traits.

Overall, I enjoyed it as a fun, quick read.
