Using Paris as a backdrop, this gorgeous book deals with one day in the lives of six people paired by twos as French teacher and student. Written in three sections and each section revolving around each couple, the reader discovers that these people are uniquely tied with one another. French Lessons is beautifully crafted by a master, Ellen Sussman, and is the kind of book you absolutely savor. Here is a lot of life's big stuff, love, sex, loss, yearning, need, and desire, served up exquisitely. To try and pin this work down as a 'beach read' or 'women's literature' is to do this novel and its writer a disservice. French Lessons is simply too well written and the denouement is that satisfying.
