If I understand correctly, this is a book Briggs wrote before she became well known, but it was only published recently. I can tell that Briggs has grown as an author a lot since writing this book. Not that it was bad (although I'm not a fan of skipping twenty years in the middle of a book), but the execution didn't live up to the promise of the synopsis --- a farmer's wife and her passel of kids go to rescue dad from evil sorcerers.

I also think that Briggs' female characters are much better in her later books. You'd think from that synopsis that the book would be all about girl power, but the mother takes the two sons with her and leaves her daughter at home to be safe. And I just don't get that much feeling of strength from our heroine, not even the moral strength of Anna in Briggs' Alpha and Omega series.

Anyway, a fun, run-of-the-mill fantasy, but not exceptional.
