This is a lesser-known novel of Charlotte Bronte, and sadly so. It is, like much of the writing of the time, slow-paced, but rich in description, commentary and literary prose. Our heroine, Lucy Snowe, lives a rich inner life and describes her surroundings with a combination of acidity and sadness. However, parts of the novel crawl by as Bronte describes with excruciating, repetitive prose the boarding school and the people in it. Overall, this is a good read for those who like/prefer classic literature. (I tend to like my books faster paced with more action, which is why the 3 instead of 4 or 5 stars. Others may appreciate Villette more than I.)
