I feel the same way as many readers who have commented before me - I loved Anne Rice's vampire and witch novels of years past, but something has profoundly changed Ms. Rice's writing style and unfortunately she has yet to return to the heyday of her wonderful writing, even in this book.

I was intrigued with this particular subject and was happy that the first bit of the book was reminiscent of the old books, beautifully descriptive and lush, but that eventually shifted and it turned into something that was somewhat of a chore for me to read. It was almost as if when the word "chrism" was first introduced into the story, the novel turned from a wonderful fantasy fiction involving werewolves, to something else entirely different filled with long, boring discussions of philosophy. If the first bit of the story continued along in the same fashion until the end, this would have undoubtedly been a 4-5 star read, but unfortunately it took a dive and fell short in the end.
