1923 Pulitzer Prize winner, and I can see why. She perfectly captures what must have been the experience of many American men who fought in WWI: that this was their chance to escape. I see an allegory for the country as a whole: That the country was changed by those who came back with a new view on the world and themselves. A new insight into what they were capable of and what their lives could be and how they had a power to shape it they had not previously felt they had.

Very moving and simply written, with a quiet eloquence and human liberalism.
