This is probably my last venture into the sci-fi thriller genre, at least for now, or until Patrick Lee comes out with something new. I would describe this as a cross between Journey to the Center of the Earth and the first hour or so of the latest version of King Kong. Add to this a Russian psychopath, an arrogant scientist, an expert rock climber and an invincible soldier, you have what you would think you would have - A guessing game over who will get their nasty death next.

This was much better written than the last sci-fi thriller I read, Pulse, but was not very interesting to me nonetheless. If I enjoyed the ganre, I would probably go back to Beck as an author - unfortunately, I have been spoiled by Patrick Lee's work, whose work in this area is superior on many levels.

Read this on an airplane.
