I'm not sure I liked this one better than the first book in the series, but it was still good. It was a little more slow-paced than I thought it would be, but it is actually kind of an in-between book with another cliff-hanger at the end. The slow parts in the beginning don't really take away from the story either, they just lend to strengthening the camaraderie between the Herons and it was fun to watch Thorn train them. I'm still not quite sure what I think about Lydia. I almost felt that she didn't really have to be necessary. "The Outcasts" did well enough without a lead female role, I think we could have done without one in this book too, but that's my opinion. I was also a little disappointed that Hal and Tursgud didn't get to meet again in this book and settle their problem once and for all, but I bet that will come later. Zavac on the other hand is seriously a great pirate and a worthy villain. He's cold and evil and yet he manages to not be cliche. Now I'm eagerly awaiting the next installment of this series, and I hope it's not too long before it comes out!

Yeah, I was starting to get the feeling that this one is a little slower. I can already say that it didn't need to be 400-some pages long. Is Lydia at least better than Cassandra/Evelyn?

Oh yah, she's more palatable than the princess ;) She isn't really a bad character, she just didn't seem necessary. I was wondering if John Flanagan only added her to make the girl readers happy. I find that girls usually tend to like to read about guys more, haha ;) At least I do.
From what I know of Flanagan, my guess is he probably did it for the girl readers - even though both you and I are females and would prefer it if there had been no leading lady. ;)
I guess I'm not the nicest writer in the world because I write what I want to and I don't try to cater to anyone's wants. :P I do add girl characters but it's to help the plot, not just to have a female role ;)
I know I'm preaching to the choir when I say that it's better to cater to what the story wants and needs, and never to the Readers. Readers don't always know what's best for a story. But I imagine you already know that. ;)
Oh yes, in fact, that might be the subject of my new blog post ;) I'd like you to know that a lot of our conversations spur the muse for what I write articles about, so thank you ;) Next though, I am working on writing humorous reviews for the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. I think you'll like them from what we've talked about before ;)
