This is probably my favorite book of all time and the movie doesn't do this book any justice. Personal stories for me make history so much more fun. Probably why I researched my own family history's envolvement in the Civil War and using my thrid great-grandmother's story as inspiration for my reenacting persona, Amanda Unger. In Gods and Generals you see the loving soul of General Jackson and not just his zeal on the battlefield; the relationship that tied Armistead to Hancock although they fought on separate sides during the Civil War; and Chamberlain's growth to becoming the General you see at Gettysburg.
