Funny story: I'm trying to shelve this book, and can't remember if it had been banned (but I thought it had - google confirmed). At the same time, my friend Allison and I are chatting on Google Chat, and she starts ranting about how ridiculous book banning is (an opinion with which I agree wholeheartedly). Anyway, the conversation went like this:

me: Is Holes a banned book? I can't remember
allison: dunno... the whole concept of banned books is stupid. I mean, you could find a reason to gripe about any book
me: yes, I agree
allison: I think The Replacement should be banned because there is a scene talking about knives in the kitchen
allison: VIOLENCE
me: haha just wait
allison: and he sits on his roof
allison: DANGEROUS BEHAVIOR
allison: RECKLESS
me: He says the F word, and there are BOOBIES!
allison: PORNOGRAPHY
me: IMMORALITY!
allison: lol
allison: or you could go the other way and be totally ridiculous
allison: Holes doesn't directly support a gay lifestyle
allison: BAN IT
me: But it does...
allison: oh well then uh...
me: all those boys are in and out of holes all day long

Needless to say, there was laughter. Sometimes I crack myself up.

Anyway, all witty repartee aside, I really liked this book. I have no idea why it would have been banned unless it was because a kid hits a jerk in the face with a shovel for being a complete ass to him day in and day out? That's probably it. ENCOURAGING VIOLENT BEHAVIOR AND DISRESPECT FOR AUTHORITY! BAN IT!

I loved Stanley, but in all truth, I loved Zero more. He was the star of this show for me. I wanted everything to work out for him, and I was on pins and needles worrying about him when things started to go bad for him. I mean, these kids committed crimes, or at least they were accused of committing crimes, but they weren't BAD or EVIL. Punishment is one thing, but the kind of things that these kids were made to do is nothing short of abuse. And what's sad is that probably isn't a far stretch from what really happens - although probably for different reasons.

I enjoyed how the three different storylines all came together in this one, and seeing the little bits of each one felt like discovering a gem. I'd have this, "OH!" moment each time something was revealed that linked something else... Really fun to read.

I really enjoyed this one, and I look forward to seeing the movie soon, since I hear from Allison that it's fabulous. :)

Sandi The movie is very good and follows the story pretty closely. However, the kid who plays Stanley is exactly the opposite of the Stanley described in the book.

Leslie Holes was banned? Geez why?

Libby I really enjoyed the movie as well - I didn't realize it was a banned book- how absurd

Michelle Holes has not been banned. Far from it, it won a Newberry. A good Google would have answered this question.

Chelsey Lmao. You're right. It does support a gay lifestyle. Bloody brilliant! Still giggling.

Michelle Er, no, it doesn't support a gay lifestyle. The author just didn't bother to add in any token female characters to his camp of juvenile delinquent boys. Why does everyone seem to think that two fictional characters cannot just be platonic friends anymore?

Leslie gay lifestyle? Is this a joke?

Becky Leslie wrote: "gay lifestyle? Is this a joke?"

Yes. It was, actually.

Michelle The internet has no tone of voice, sadly. I really hope the commenter agreeing with your joke is also joking, though the l33tspeak makes me concerned.

Becky Michelle wrote: "Holes has not been banned. Far from it, it won a Newberry. A good Google would have answered this question."

Actually, I did do a search and there's quite a few results that indicate that Holes was banned or challenged. A single school or community is all it takes.

When did I say that boys couldn't be friends?

The entire conversation that I quoted was hyperbolic sarcasm. I thought that was pretty clear. Perhaps I should add a sense of humor warning.

You could add a warning, Becky, but it wouldn't matter. There are always people who are going to pick apart comments. Always assume the worst first, right? (that was sarcasm....)

Btw, great review! As always, I love your sense of humor and your reviews continue to be interesting and great!

*headdesk* Oh right "In and out of holes all day" I get it now. :P

No warnings are required. I'd read your review long ago and should have re-read when I had my "What?" moment in response to another person's comment. Sorry Becky. It is in fact totally funny!

I love your hyperbole. :D

LOL Exactly! ;)

Becky No worries, Leslie! :)

Michelle The internet has no tone of voice, which is why you didn't hear my own sarcasm in that last line. (Though I have picked up this impression from overexposure to fanfiction.)

Lily Banned? U sure, cuz my class is reading this in school right now.

Becky It was on a search of banned or challenged books. I don't know why or where, just that Google returned it in a search.

george kincaid the movie is funnier

Rob Falcon honestly though...it was an odd review. Why did you write about a google chat session...how about just review the book. So I can figure out if its a good fit for my 11 yr old son. But also, thanks for at least posting something that got people talking. :)

Becky Rob wrote: "honestly though...it was an odd review. Why did you write about a google chat session...how about just review the book. So I can figure out if its a good fit for my 11 yr old son."

Well, you could try reading it for yourself. I am not sure when I became responsible for providing info about whether a book is a good fit for YOUR kid.

This is my review space, and I'll use it how I choose.

Trinity Is Holes banned??? I didn't know that Holes was banned... Where is it banned? School?? I read Holes at school...

message 22: by Becky (last edited Jul 06, 2015 11:54AM) (new) - rated it 3 stars

Becky No, I was trying to determine if it was, but I don't think so.

rivka It appears to have been challenged by parents at least twice (in publicized cases; there were probably far more quiet attempts), but never actually banned.

Rafi Snowden why would it be banned???

Becky rivka wrote: "It appears to have been challenged by parents at least twice (in publicized cases; there were probably far more quiet attempts), but never actually banned."

Thanks, Rivka.

Becky Rafi wrote: "why would it be banned???"

*shrug* People can find something objectionable in just about anything.

The Reviewer If I had to guess, I'd say the KKK or some other racist d**** wanted it banned because of the interracial relationship.

Also, your review made me actually laugh out loud

Joaquin lol

Daniel sarcasam

Mendy If at least one school has banned it then it will usually end up on a banned list. Every year I do a display of banned books in my teen section with labels where and why they were banned, there are some very ridiculous reason. Obviously I'm in the school of thought that banning is ridiculous and I thought your review was hilarious!
