Read in August, 2008

In the early 1930s, young Patrick Leigh Fermor decided to leave England and, with little more than a headful of art and literature, travel by foot from Holland to Istanbul (or Constantinople, as Fermor still insisted on calling it). The Nazis had just taken control of Germany and their presence, buffoonish and frightening all at once, casts long shadows through an otherwise airy and delightful book, full of beautiful descriptions, warm meetings and bits of history.
