While certain elements of this are certainly outdated, the meat of this work is applicable today, and will be for quite a while. Pope John Paul II had a wisdom and understanding that elevated him above many of his fellow Pontiffs.

While he makes reference to many works of Catholic importance that I was not familiar with, he presented and explained them enough that I was able to follow his explanations. This also had a much less academic feel than some of his other writings as you can tell it was intended for a mass audience.

A valuable read for people of all denominations and walks.
