In the not-so-distant future, all but the most violent criminals are allowed to go free, with one distinction. Their skin is dyed to indicate their crime. After an abortion, Hanna is convicted of murder and her skin is dyed red, and she is left to struggle with not just life as a criminal, but reconciling her conservative upbringing and beliefs with the hatred and hypocrisy she finds.

With the religious right running the country, there is a dissolution of the separation of church and state. Mixed with all the technological advances, and with the erosion of privacy following in a logical progression from today, this novel was scary and unsettling while still an entertaining read.
