really liked it
bookshelves: historical-fiction

Historical fiction set in 1871 New York, following the travails of a poor 12 year old being groomed for prostitution. Sad to realize that her situation is actually MUCH better than that of many young women on the streets. This is a thought-provoking read, interspersed with historical notes about the time (which are troubling because it's not clear which are real and which fictional), with an ending engineered to be as happy as such a situation could allow. The time period leads up to what would later be called 'the Gilded Age:' there's a pitiful irony in that.
