I didn't enjoy this installment as much as Obsidian. I think it was that I knew what was coming up at the very end of the novella and I was dreading it. This issue caused me not to become invested in the characters, to not connect. (view spoiler)[ I believe that they weren't actually killed but that DOD took them. Especially with their interest in studying them. (hide spoiler)]
I am curious where this story leads in the main premise of the series. It's doubtful that Armentrout would introduce us to the characters then give us a Novella only to have it end so tragically. I know we will hear from them both again.
Shadows didn't have the same feel as Obsidian to me. It wasn't the characters. The humor was missing, the connection of the characters, the chemistry. I missed it all. It's what made me fall in love with the series in the first place.
Ultimately I am sad but hopeful!
