I understand that the target audience for this book is 14-year-old girls, so as a 37 year-old man I did my best to make allowances, which basically come down to this: good story, terrible writing.
The characters annoyed me more often than not with their teenage whining and insecurities, and it just felt that the characters had the same long and painfully obtuse discussions about their angst over and over and over again.
That said, I really liked the story itself - the premise, the pacing (ok, it did get a bit slow in places, mostly due to angst. See above) and the tale overall.
I have not read the other three books, and as interested as I am in the story, I don't think I can bear the emotions and hormones of the characters.
