This is a Very Serious Book. It takes itself too seriously which is why, despite stellar writing and some seriously intriguing chapters, I’m giving it 3 stars. The premise is super hook-y and commercial. In the hours after one of the characters gets married a carful of wedding guests hits and kills a little girl. We get to see how the lives of these passengers (and the bride) turn out. Mostly it focuses on three siblings: Carmen, Nick, and Alice but there are also “Tom” and “Jean” and various and sundry other folks (extremely big car apparently) and for the life of me I could never remember who they were or what their purpose was. That was kind of my problem with this book. There isn’t a lot of purpose, mostly a lot of depressing (or, alternately, boring) people doing depressing and boring things. It starts out slow, it ends slow too, but the middle was fairly gripping. I just expected a lot more given the very high concept and strong writing.
