I avoided reading this as long as I could because I loathe dystopias, child abuse, and violence, all of which feature here. Turns out I was right to avoid it. Collins is a good writer: the characters are memorable, the settings well-described, and the structure effective. The whole concept is just appalling, though. It made me nauseous to read, and gave me several nightmares. I wish I had not read it.

Raevyn ~I Stand For Jesus~ Why do you "loathe dystopias"???? No offense, I'm just curious.

Rebecca They depress the hell out of me. Not what I'm looking for when I read a book!

Raevyn ~I Stand For Jesus~ I love them, but I can definitely see your point--they can be pretty bleak (it's the reason my grandmother wouldn't even consider reading this book). At least you're expressing a different viewpoint than all those people who think it's "THE BEST SERIES EVER!!!!!" :)
