Bared to You (Crossfire, #1)

DNFed half way through. When the hero takes the heroine to his love shack hotel room filled with love toys where he's had many women in the past, I decided this book wasn't for me. There's no emotional connection between the hero and heroine, just sex and more sex.
Also the writing seems disjointed and stilted at times. Had a hard time following.
Seems way too much like Fifty Shades and makes me think the author jumped on the Fifty Shades bandwagon.

I'm a few chapters in and I'm starting to get that same vibe, even though I haven't read FSoG. I've picked up enough online to know the gist of it. Her clumsiness when she meets him, the young gazillionaire CEO, his immediate infatuation with her without even knowing if she kicks puppies and chews her hair...yeah, I'm making the comparisons too. I will say this, though - the writing is "fifty" times better.

I find it to be too much like that book and I guess I shouldn't come out and say copy cat, right?
I think it makes perfect sense, though, if you read 50 and liked it, you would like this, or if you hated it you *might* not like this one. I didn't read 50 so that, along with much better writing, may be why I'm still reading. We'll see how far I get. Right now the only thing that's bothering me about Gideon is his pushiness. Also, the freakin' elevator is a character on its own! LOL

Well, I got to that part last night and rolled my eyes. At least she stomped out, but I kept reading. More like skimming. I've highlighted a few sentences that made me say W-T-F. In one place he says, "I've scandalized you." Huh? Who says that? Then during a sex scene he says, "I want to feel my cum in you when I fuck you with my fingers. I want you to feel my cum in you, so you think about how I looked and the sounds I made when I pumped it into you."Sorry, but that's just gross. I think I typed "dear lord..." in my notes. And she'll use the word "cum" twice in one paragraph but I haven't run across the word "pussy" anywhere yet. Good grief. So far I'm not really liking either character very much.

And she's constantly musing about how hot he is. After a few chapters, we get it! He's the hottest, handsomest man on the effin' planet.Sorry, I'll shut up now. Think this one's going to be a DNF for me too.
Even the names remind me of 50 shadesEva/Ana and Gideon Cross/Christian Grey. Too obvious. Will probably skip this one.

Very obvious.

I do enjoy some of Sylvia's historicals, but this one doesn't work for me for the reason I explained. But if a certain type of book sells well, other writers will follow to grab onto those readers. And it looks like it's working in this case.
I really don't have a problem at all with her putting a book out with FSoG undertones (if that's at all what she intended, which it certainly seems to be), and her writing is far and above that of Ms. James. This book surpassed FSoG by simply being edited. I just felt no connection to the characters whatsoever, there were certain aspects of the story that were far-fetched - a 28yo billionaire, really? It was over the top with the drama. They both behave like children at times. Just couldn't get vested in the story enough to want to finish it.

Probably purely coincidence that the hero in this one has the same initials as Christian Grey, just flipped. :P

Me neither. I'm turned off by the subject matter and the relentless hype. The herd instinct is not strong with me.It's time for a flist culling. I'm tired of the erotica popping up everywhere and it seems like that's what some people read 24/7.

Also the hero must be some uber alpha jerk who wants complete control over the meek heroine. I'm writing a BDSM erotic with a laid back hero who likes freaky sex because he just does.
So these books are really just really raunchy and sexed-up Harlequin Presents, with the standard meek heroines and alpha jerks. LOL

I had not thought of it, but you're right, this was like Harlequin! With the vapid female and the rich Alpha hero.Right on!
Katie(babs) wrote: "Jenny wrote: "Katie(babs), I want to read that book!"Roarke?"
No, no! LOL The book you're writing with the hero who's into the freaky sex with no underlying "reason". I want that book!

Ohh... I have plans to. ;)
I saw your comment on your round-up post about Bared To You, and wow. I read the amazon free sample of BTY, so, about two chapters, I guess? And when the scenes map exactly, and the DIALOG is exactly the same... well, something is up there. I don't know who came first but something is not right.

Was this intended to be a copy of FSoG? Or could it be a coincidence? You say it's edited, and Day is already with a NYT Pub, could it just have taken Day longer to get it published than what James did (since she self-pubbed w/o editing)?Just playing devil's advocate here. I've read so many romance novels that have been done, that I have a hard time thinking copy-cat when it comes to the genre.
