It took me a little bit to get into this Bauer novel, but eventually, I bought in. Not sure why I felt a slow start, because really, all the attractive elements are there: strong, smart female protagonist; interesting small community with a pressing need; cute, brainy boy just hoping for a chance at our girl; and The Bad Guy. Perhaps, like growing a good apple, it just took the passage of time. I was a little disappointed that, for me, the strings were pretty obvious early on, but once I made it to the dueling newspapers, it was smooth going to the end. A good, rewarding read. No fireworks, but sweet and crisp, like the apples Hildy loves so much.
