What surprised me most is how quickly I picked this book up off the shelf and borrowed it once I realised it was a sequel to West End Shuffle. Because I didn't actually like West End Shuffle all that much. This was a better book: Carmen is no more likeable, let alone more sensible, but there's such a sense of place with this one, and Ingrid isn't Ella-Malvina :-) Some of the characters - Helene, Albert - are wonderfully drawn, and given her character, Carmen's final decision makes perfect sense. I just still don't think I like Carmen one little bit. (And I'm used to "ballet stories" having likeable leads.)
