Another fantastic fantasy book by Brandon Mull! Full of action, imagination, and detail, this foreign world becomes believable in your mind. This series is incredibly well thought out so that trivial questions are answered before you even know you have them, leaving room for the greater puzzle to be worked out. As many questions are answered, new questions and new suspicions arise. The locations with their inherent dangers are completely original, yet well described. I love reading books by this author, because he is one of the few that I cannot predict and have been pleasantly suprised every time. Nothing is held back, and nothing is easily gained. Every progression forward for these characters come with a steep price. Do yourself a favor, and re-read "Beyonders, A World Without Heroes" before beginning this book, to re-familiarize yourself with the characters and setting. The books are so rich, that many important items are overlooked and forgotten. Characters that seemed inconsequential in the first book turn out to be anything but in the second. Even with many characters, each one is well developed, with many layers, so that they feel tangibly real. Not any one is perfect, or even a characterization. There is room for suspicion, failure, greatness, triumph, in each one; and we get to go along for the ride and see how their decisions make events unfold. It was fun to see characters who weren't prominent, or even felt second rate themselves, find their purpose to the quest in this book. Likewise, it was nice to see others who seemed so important in the first book, find themselves in a lesser role, and how they reacted. It really helped make them feel like real people, not just characters in a book. I eagerly aniticipate the thrid and final installment of this sereies next year. By experience, I know this is one author who will deliver and won't disappoint.
