I loved this book. Actually, I would give it 41/2 stars but, as you see, that's not an option. The story of the"descendants" actually serve as a sub plot to the actual story but lays the foundation for it in terms talking about family, and what it really means, especially to one that must change in crisis. It's told from a father's point of view and you really feel all the emotion as he realizes he's been so busy making a living that he has, at times, neglected to make a life. Definitely worth the read. I watched the movie right after (I usually let time pass so I don't remember every detail in such crystal clarity) and they did make a few changes, most notably, his wife's name, which I don't understand at ALL. Seems so insignificant. The movie was really good but I don't know if I would have enjoyed it as much if I hadn't read the book. I had back story to go on that the casual viewer didn't. That always makes me feel bad for those who didn't read the book. In any case, I loved this book.
