Very interesting memoir written by Simon Winchester about his trip up the Yangtze River to its head waters. Not only does he describe the Yangtze, its beauty and its wildness, but also tells of the long Chinese history that has this long river as its focal point. His trip and his book predate the building of the Three Gorges Dam, a quite recent accomplishment. Although the dam allows safer travel by ship to the interior city of Chongqing, I can't help but think that a portion of its beauty and history has been lost.
