An understated story with experiences so different from any of my own, yet it pulled me in and kept me there until the end. Enjoyable for that unusual gift a book can give, sharing a time or place effortlessly, letting the details and character propel an unexpected interest in a history I would never have thought to try to know.

"It will always be a mourning place, a place longing for redemption, for there is no end to the memory of it, no chance of forgetting, and because of that I knew that day long ago that I would have to go home, though I wondered what would await me there in the country in which I was born but had never belonged."
