The entire time I read this book, I felt as though it was really Marie Anoinette telling me her story as it happened. I was her closest friend and confidant. Ms. Naslund was able to capture the voice of an historical figure and really make me feel intimate with her. It wasn't about a grande dame living her life. It was about a young woman who is sent from home to a completely new place and forced to find her way, many times with errors along the way.
I shook my head at her silly mistakes, laughed at the joy he took from her interest, mourned when she lost those closest to her. After reading Antonia Fraser's biography on Marie Anoinette, this is a good companion to help bring out her voice.
