I see what the hype is about. Great characters and more than a few "oh wow" moments. Perhaps the next book does, but this one doesn't deserve comparisons to Lord of the Rings; aside from the direwolves and The Others, it's more of a alternative history Middle Ages story. Kings and Knights and Lords and double crosses aplenty. There was a twist at the end that leads me to believe the next book will be more akin to Tolkien's universe. We'll see.

Catelyn, Eddard, Tyrion, Bron, Ayra, Sanya, Jon, Dany...there are so many characters it almost matches the Wheel of Time saga for sheer volume (another masterpiece to which it's been compared). With so many characters, and the plots they forward, it's ok if you don't like one or more, you'll soon be involved an one that you do like.
