Dick Francis wrote this with his son, and there's a palpable quality difference between this and his solo writing. I actively cringed and yelled, "FELIX, NO!" at the tape deck (I listened to it in the car) multiple times. At one point the protagonist weeps and angsts about his dead father, and some of the interior dialogue around the romance is just...painful. I figured out the mystery about halfway through and stopped listening - I couldn't take the rest of it. I usually love Francis's mysteries, but this went over the top in a variety of very wrong ways.
