I tend to prefer the older books from the 1970s in this series. The locales seem even more exotic with the extra distance of time and the covers are much better, usually garish illustrations featuring a man who looks like Stanley Baker. The mustachioed dude in the photo-covers from the 80s looks like the lost member of the Village People. This one was pretty good. It reads like an unholy cross between Lord Jim and Zulu.
