Virginia Woolf is the obvious reference point. John Banville's world of privilege and ennui feels like it could have been cribbed from a Woolf novel, and, much like the later Woolf, he tends to linger over concrete details. I will say, I find the Virginia Woolf of Orlando and Mrs. Dalloway far more engaging than the Woolf of The Waves, but I like the Woolf of The Waves as well. If you liked The Waves, you'll like The Sea. If it bored you to tears, The Sea will bore you to tears.
