Susan Ray Schmidt was a plural wife of Verlan LeBarron - wife number five I think - it gets hard to keep track. A while ago I read Shattered Dreams by Irene Spencer who was the second plural wife of Verlan LeBarron. (She also wrote Blood Atonement which was really good.) I have to say that I really liked Shattered Dreams better than this book. It was faster paced maybe. Or maybe because I already knew a lot of the story from a different point of view, so I felt like this book progressed slower. Here's the thing though, I suppose it really isn't fair to compare the two books.

How would I review this book if I hadn't read the other one? To begin with it was a slow starter. The story was very compelling and quite shocking to my way of thinking, but I think that maybe the author, Ms. Schmidt, repeats herself a bit. She will make a point and later do it again only in different words, as if she is worried that we missed the point. I stayed up late one night to read an exciting bit and I just wanted to shout "Yes, I get it, you're sad about your Aunt Thelma! Move on." Other than that, it was a great story and a great book. But if you can only read one, I suggest you read Shattered Dreams by Irene Spencer.
