3.5 stars. I had a hard time putting this book down. I get easily irritated when you know only bad things are coming the whole way through, but I found several of the characters intriguing enough to keep reading. I was glad I did. I thought the climax was not fully developed, especially the motivations of the son, and I repeatedly thought how too many circumstantial things happened right when one of the characters could learn the truth and end their suffering. Stringing it out but enabling the plot I suppose. I also wanted a bit more context about the time period but the narrow point of view centered around the plantation again served the plot.
