This is the haughtiest recipe book I've encountered. But isn't that what you should expect from a book entitled, "How to Eat Supper" [emphasis mine]? Eye roll.

You're not going to win my admiration when you pepper your pages with unsympathetic quotations like, "Don't ask a butcher how to prepare meat. If he knew, he'd be a chef," (thanks Andy Rooney!) or, better yet, the obfuscatory remark, "...a Catherine Deneuve makeover of the produce section." I love Deneuve, but that's a dated reference. They probably picked it just to make their readers feel stupid.

There are "splendid" recipes here, for sure, but I don't feel like muddling through this idiotic, classist tome that presumes to tell myself and others "how" to enjoy eating. We know how to enjoy eating. It's food, god damn it.

And this is coming from a dedicated foodie.
